Among the creations of the traditional culture of the Serbian people - for his role in everyday life and sense of ethnic identity, as well as artistic and aesthetic values - one of the most important place belongs to the traditional costumes. They are known mostly because of the costumes which preserved from the nineteenth and beginning of thetwentieth century, characterized by great diversity in form and decoration. The diversityand richness is present in women's and men's costumes. Each area had its own special costume. By way of dressing distinguish not only where they were from him, particularlyin mixed ethnic areas, and which ethnic or national community belongs.

In the wide variety of costumes, but special forms of dress from one to the other rural areas, there were also marked differences in dress between urban and rural populations. Urban clothing in most of the Serbian ethnic area developed underTurkish-Oriental, and later, as in Pannonia and the Adriatic coast, largely Europeanin fluences.
Urban costumes Balkan-Oriental style, made of expensive fabrics and rich gold and silver embroidery, was a high-quality handicrafts.
Peasant dress, on the contrary, until the early twentieth century, and in materials anddesign, were largely the product of home and village industries. They were fashioned by women, but they were certain parts were done by village artisans. Experience and tradition were passed from older to younger, from generation to generation.

A glance at the various peasant dress reveals certain specificities in the combination of functional, artistic and aesthetic characteristics of clothing in larger areas. The same or similar economic circumstances, conditioned by geographical setting, historical, social and cultural development led to the creation of certain elements of clothing in the larger cultural and geographic areas, such as the Dinaric, Adriatic, central and Pannonian.

In each area with regard to materials for making and decorating which the region offered, then the cut-out shapes and decorative as well as clothing traditions and cultural development is characteristic of the basic type of costume, which comes in many varieties of clothing and decorative.

Despite all the diversity of clothing in the mountainous, coastal, slightly corrugated and lowland environments, with specific conditions of national life and culture, as a whole, all these costumes are characterized by unity of general expressions and looks. This unity, based on centuries of national experience, traditions, needs and skills, is presented in the visual harmony of the basic structural elements, which form a harmonious whole and cause the distribution of ornamental compositions. By visual characteristics andundoubtedly a great aesthetic values, traditional costumes and the Serbs from first decades of the twentieth century, reaching the top of the traditional artistic achievements of the collective national spirit, not only their environment but also beyond.

Since the end of the nineteenth century, since the traditional way of dressing gives way to urban, European clothes, folk costumes became the cultural and historical value of the inherited, but they were in daily use retained only exceptionally, in some closed areas certain special occasions.
